Full Version: The Golden Girls Set/Props

I think we have mentioned, in other threads, about scenes/sets/props from the Golden Girls used on other shows.

Last night I was looking through one of my tapes and I came across a couple of episodes of Who's The Boss?, where Angela's ex-husband is getting married so the whole family go to California. Does the lanai at the hotel remind you of anything...

If I'm not mistaken, that's also the Golden Girls table they've got there blink.gif

Yes you're absolutely right Sam I never noticed that, amazing! I'm a WTB? fan too but I never made the connection

Well, it sure does look like it is the same set...maybe a little rearranged. But that show was on another network and under different production management I believe, so I kind of doubt they had access to the same props. But maybe we could ask Andrew.

You know I just went back and looked at those pictures and the only thing that really looks similar is the floor. The whatever-it's-called wall that holds the plants is different, the background is different, I believe the furniture is different too, and the plants are just average plastic plants.

You're right, the floor is especially the same. If you're having doubts though, look at proportions and where the walls are... blink.gif

Oh yeah, I meant to tell you all this like 2 weeks ago but I forgot.

My friend recently went to LA. He went on the WB studio backlot tour, and said that the furniture and props from Golden Girls are being stored there, at Warner Bros. I can't remember if he said that the sets were there or not (I'll have to ask next time I see him). So I guess things do get passed around.

Anyway, I just thought that was interesting.
Sam
When you actually watch that episode of Who's The Boss? then you can see the similarities a lot more than you can on those screenshots, naturally. The wedding is held there so you see the backdrop a bit more and it does look an awful lot like the GG set - difficult to convey in screenshots, however smile.gif

Yes, good points, all, especially Ingmar. Maybe the shows produced by different companies don't use each other's sets/props, but they certainly do so within the same company. And especially if they are shot at the same studio.

I've heard many stories like this--sometimes something is just painted a different color, or is designed so it can be minimized or expanded for later use (like a wall).

WHen I was in college studying theater, ALMOST EVERYTHING was re-used for almost every play. In fact, I remember the design guy saying that was his biggest challenge--to try to design stuff that would suit the play at hand, but could be re-used later.

Something just pointed out to me recently--on Bewitched, Larry and Louise Tate's kitchen is the SAME ONE belonging to Major Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie. Also, the Donna Reed Show house (or kitchen) was used on another sitcom.

Wow, here we are 11 years after the end of the show and the stuff is still in storage. I wonder how he found that out Katie.

God, what I would give for that COUCH to be my very own! hahah, seriously! And that gaudy tropical leaf pattern comforter on Blanche's bed.

Choc, I have a question about what you wrote about the Bewitched and Dream of Jeannie sets...those shows ran concurrently for most of their time on the air. I don't understand how they could have shared sets. Or wait, you mean the kitchen set stayed put while the two shows shared it for filming? Wow, now that is being economical! tongue.gif

It's too bad I can't remember either set offhand.

Yes, that must have been the way it was done, as it was absolutely the same set. The other thing was that 'Bewitched' didn't use it as frequently as 'Jeannie', so scheduling was likely not a big deal.

Also, on 'Bewitched', whenever Darrin & Sam were at a hotel, it was the same set as their bedroom at home, simply rearranged.

lol. Sophia: too much wicker!

I was wondering if anyone knew which studio WTB? is shot at. IS it by any chance the Desilu studios, because in that case the set is definately the same, but then again, I don;t know whether the lanai scenes were shot at the Desilu studios, although I assume so... wacko.gif
James
The Golden Girls was filmed at Ren Mar Studios which was once the home of Desilu Studios.

Who's the Boss? was filmed Sunset-Gower Studios.

Remember Kids...

The first 2 seasons of The Golden Girls was shot in a different place then the other 5.... Perhaps that was the reason of the "remodeling" of the kitchen.

I was talking with a kid the other day who told me the studio of where they did the first two seasons. But, I've forgotten it now. I actually saw where they shot those two seasons, as well.

Lauren =)

Well on today's ep (Rse's birthday and Blanche hires a detective for rose's b-day) when Rose and Miles go out onto the lanai the floor is different, its a sort of brown circle thing

I had no idea Seasons 1-2 of The Golden Girls were shot at a different studio than Seasons 3-7. You learn something new everyday!

I have never noticed any real differences between the kitchen used in Seasons 1-2 and the kitchen used in Seasons 3-7. How were the two kitchens different?

The kitchen did change, but I think if you watch you will see the difference after season 1 actually.

Season 2, as far as I can tell, had the kitchen we basically recognize through the rest of the series, though maybe a little less decorated. Just look at the wallpaper in the first season, it is plain and drab. Then the second season it has a pattern.

I had heard before that the first 2 seasons were filmed somewhere else too, I think it was in an interview but I am not sure.

My friend went on the WB Studios backlot tour and actually got to see it. They're keeping it in a warehouse or something. I talked to Dustin last night, but forgot to ask if it was just props/furniture, or sets as well. D'oh!

For those in the UK, watch 3rd Rock From The Sun on Paramount, 11th September @ 3pm or 2.30am for the episode called 'Dick-in-Law' and you'll notice that Mary Albrights parents house is the set used in the GG episode, Room 7 - Grammy's House. Elaine Stritch (who was in the running to play Dorothy) plays the mother of Mary Albright and George Grizzard who played Jamie, Blanche's brother-in-law in the GG's, plays Mary's father smile.gif

I just noticed a post by Uklad24 back in May

Paramount channel is showing the first season of Ellen at the moment, and I am certain there's an episode coming up whereby she gets freaked out because she thinks her new boyfriend speaks to her on the phone from the toilet. Keep an eye out for his appartment door  It's the Golden Girls front door, complete with Exlamation mark carving.

I feel really strange about this door (with Bea Arthur's alleged carved exclamation point) being cannablized for other shows mad.gif ...in fact I am not comfortable with the set being disassembled at all, as it is still completely together in my wacky head.
GoldenGirlsTrivia
That certainly does look like the Girls' lanai being used by Tony Danza and co. It rather makes me sad to think that countless other shows and movies have pilfered away all of the items from the set and that the set hasn't been preserved in the Smithsonian Institute's Pop Culture exhibit, a la Fonzie's leather jacket and Archie Bunker's chair from All in the Family...

Yes! You are right, the whole set should be put in the Smithsonian tongue.gif
That's where it belongs!

This isn't props being used on another show, but I thought it was interesting.

I noticed a visitor to my site, in my stats, from an unusual referrer. It was from this page (click on Banana Palm - top left of image on that page which looks like Blanche's wallpaper! This guy has a FANTASTIC house. Check out 'The Cabana Guest Room' by scrolling down this page!.

This chap also has a partner called 'Clayton' - the name of Blanche's brother.

They must be loaded! What a house.

Speaking of the banana print showing up places. I noticed that the hotel that they stayed in on the season finale of "Friends" in May (and the first episode this season) had that print all through the hallway. I am sure that it is not the same wallpaper, since Blanche's was put up on a wall nearly 20 years ago...but it is very similar. I guess it is sort of popular (or was at some point).

He must be extremely rich as he could afford to retire from AOL at 33. Dont'cha just hate 'em? They've also got a massive house in Maryland aswell!

Like Ingmar von Bergen said, what a house!

I hope my house is like that when I am older.

I noticed the set from The episode where they demolotion Blanche's granny's house & the murder mystery episode was used in an epsideo of Roseanne from the final season where she goes to stay with a friend and her family in Martha's vineyard
GoldenGuy5282
I also noticed in the show Friends, there is a cookie jar of a clown in Joey and Chandler's apartment, and in the show Grounded for Life, they used the jar in the episode called Dust in the Wind! I saw the Grounded for Life episode before I got into Friends, and then when I started watching Friends, there was the clown jar in (almost) every episode and I was like "Woah!"
