Right - I have seasons 1 to 4 now but my birthday is coming up and my dad has told me to give him a list of what I want tomorrow - is it worth including Season 5 of TGG on that list? You have 24 Hours and please be brutally honest because I don't want to be let down (in other words watching it and then say "oh, I should of got something else instead").
Sorry to sound so dramatic but it's always the case with me - I want things there and then,

Matty, I would say that Season 5 is the weakest season of the show. However, I wouldn't be without it. There are still some hilarious moments and poignant storylines. If you want more slapstick, though, I'd go for Seasons 6 or 7. You'll probably get more laughs out of those.

Well its really up to you, it is quite a good Season (then again, there isn't really a bad Season, IMO).
I personally own it (and now have all 7 Seasons), I'd say if you're looking to get all 7 Seasons sooner or later then ask your dad for it.
If there's something else you want more then go for that instead, but if you cant think of anything go with GG

I agree with Paul. I love season 5 and I think no Golden Girls fan should be without it. Happy
early Birthday.

Season 5 is a must have!!!!! Some classic moments, and the bonus feature is a definite keepsake. Without hesitation, get Season 5.
Although I wouldn't be without all seasons now, I think if I had to give one up for any reason then it would be Season 5. The storylines are more serious, in my opinion. Like Rob I'd go for Seasopn 6 or 7 if you wanted the more laugh out loud moments. Season 5 was the season I was less excited about getting and I waited several months before doing so.

Yeah, I don't have much more to add than what has already been said. By all means, I think a fan should own 7 seasons but there is nothing you would miss from Season 5 that would hinder your viewing of Season 6+.

I think season 5 is a good season. I don't the dvd (because it's not available on region 2) but I have at least most of the episodes on tape. I just watched some today, and they are really good. Some deal with more serious themes (a 16-year-old who's pregnant gets thrown out of her house by her dad, the homeless people on Christmas etc) but overall GG is always good.

I defnitely think you should purchase it. This marks the beginning of a new crew, mainly the writers. I don't think you can understand the humor of seasons 6 and 7 unless you see season 5. Although the episodes are more serious, you can still become more attuned to the different jokes and punchlines/running gags that are more apparent for the rest of the series' run. Of courses, I could be wrong on this. But definitely purchase season 5 anyway.

I'd put it on the list. Even though it's not my favorite season, there's a lot of good episodes. And I agree with Aurora, a fan shouldn't go without it! Maybe you could put season 6 or 7 on the list, it you're not sure, because these 2 are very good. Then you could buy or ask for season 5 last. Trust me, once you've seen all the other seasons but #5, then you'll want to see it!

I ponder this question myself. I want season 5 but I don't want cut episodes. I will probably buy it anyway, but this is a major pull back for me even if there a commentaries.

It's only one or two episodes, Jen. The vast majority of the episodes are unedited. There will probably never be any possibility to see those couple of episodes in full because, IIRC, Buena Vista said the master tapes were damaged. This may be your only chance to own Season 5, so I'd go for it.

I would get Season 5 because there are some good episodes throughout the season, even though I think the new writing staff took a while to find their feet. The episodes which are supposedly edited were on LIVINGtv last weekend and they showed the exact same episode that appears on the DVD, so I think it is a case of the master tapes being damaged or destroyed. I wouldn't be without all seven seasons now!

I hasve to agree that Season 5 is the weakest season, although it's still quite good. Ask Dad for it though, because it's worth it for epsidoes like Comedy Of Errors, and Have Yourself a Very Little Christmas. Most of the other epsidoes shouldn't siapappoint, although some really are of a low standard, but only about 4.

Right - I have decided to get Season 6 as well as Season 5 to soften the blow if I should ever get disappointed about Season 5. Thanks for all your honest opinions - they helped alot. I've decided that it's best to complete the collection because either way I love watching TGG - it seems hardly unlikely that I'll be disappointed what ever the result (we all have our list of poor episodes but they happen rarely with TGG)!
Thanks again!

After all your helpful advice as to whether buying season 5 was worth it, I decided that I should get my dad to buy it for me for my birthday. Then I thought to myself "what the hell - why don't I buy it for myself and get it now!"
Then this great Ebay seller (who I bought season 4 from - which arrived in five days and in great and new condition) was selling the remainding seasons for the same price and I'd get a discount on delivery. After some words with my mum and dad, I decided to buy them all now rather than later and just pay the money back gradually. It's worth it - particular when I know I'll be having a GG marathon for Easter!!!
Anyway sorry for rambling but I'm so happy - I'M A GG COMPLETIST!!! (such an honour - now I know how most of you feel

)
Thanks for all your advice about my earlier predicament - now it's been resolved!!!

season 5 is hit and miss to me, but I'd still get it anyways. I guess after seasons 1-4, the only way to go was down, but even "not as good" Golden Girls is still better than 97% of shows on their best day

For me, Season 5 was just a dip. I believe Seasons 6 and 7 were even better than Seasons 1-4.
