did the girls know at the start of shooting season 7 that it was going to be the last season?

Yes, because Be announced sometime between Season 5 and 6 that she would leave when her contract expired so her departure had been coming for a long time. As if that wasn't bad enough, the show was moved from its timeslot for the first time during Season 7, contributing to a sharp ratings decline. NBC screwed over one of its most successful shows in my opinion.

As far as I know, Bea wanted Season 6 to be the last season of Golden Girls, but she was persuaded to stay on for another year. So, everyone would have known that the 1991-1992 season was the last. That maybe explains why they went all-out with the storylines for Season 7, in the knowledge it would be their last. This would probably be a good question for Marc Sotkin...why not post it in his thread?
